Romería, directed by Carla Simón, follows Marina, an 18-year-old girl who was adopted as a child. She travels to Vigo to meet her biological father’s family for the first time. Both of her parents died of AIDS, and their past is surrounded by silence, stigma, and unresolved pain linked to drug addiction.
While there, Marina pieces together her parents’ story through her mother’s diary and the relationships she begins to form—especially with a cousin. As she uncovers fragments of the past, she tries to understand who her parents really were and, in turn, make sense of her own identity.
At its core, the film explores memory, family secrets, and the search for one’s origins.
